I can assure you that Foreign Minister Huitfeldt has condemned the Iranian authorities’ gross use of violence against demonstrators that we have seen in recent months, most recently in connection with the first executed death sentence related to the demonstrations. Norway supports the protesters in their demands for respect for human rights. We expect Iran to live up to its obligations under international law. Iranian authorities must listen to the people. Freedom of expression must be respected. The situation in Iran is deeply disturbing. Norway condemns the use of the death penalty against those who have participated in peaceful demonstrations and protests. This was most recently raised with the Iranian authorities when Iran’s ambassador was summoned to a meeting in the Foreign Ministry about this on 13 December this year. In the conversation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly stated that what is now happening in the country is completely unacceptable and must stop. Iran was specifically called upon to immediately halt the executions.
Norway follows the UN sanctions against Iran. We have also agreed to and implemented the EU’s sanctions against Iran. We aim to continue with that. Until the human rights situation in Iran improves, we, together with like-minded countries, will continue to engage and monitor developments in the country. We do this by talking to the authorities, negotiating in the UN and using as many opportunities as possible to express Norwegian views in support of those who are affected.
With best regards
